Sinossi Synopsis

Ramón è costretto a letto da trent'anni. La famiglia si prende cura di lui. La finestra della sua stanza che affaccia sul mare è l'unica apertura verso il mondo. Da giovane ha navigato a lungo e sul mare gli è capitato l'incidente che gli ha rovinato la vita. Da allora, l'unico suo desiderio è quello di mettere fine alla propria esistenza con dignità. L'arrivo di due donne sconvolgono il mondo di Ramón: Julia, l'avvocato che lo sostiene nella sua lotta per porre fine alla vita nel modo che ritiene giusto, e Rosa, una donna del paese, che cerca di convincerlo che vale la pena continuare

a vivere comunque. Le due donne sono sopraffatte dall'affascinante personalità di Ramón e si ritrovano costrette a dubitare di tutti i principi in cui hanno creduto fino ad ora. Ramón sa che soltanto qualcuno che lo ama davvero potrà aiutarlo a intraprendere quest'ultimo viaggio.

Ramón has been laid up in bed for thirty years, being taken care of by his family. His bedroom window is his only window to the world, overlooking the sea he so often sailed; that sea where he suffered the accident that curtailed his youth. Since then, his only wish has been to bring his life to a dignified end. His world has been turned upside down by the arrival of two women: Julia, the lawyer who supports him in his struggle to end his life as he sees fit, and Rosa, a woman from the village who tries to convince him that it is worth carrying on living after all. Both women are overwhelmed by Ramón's captivating personality, and are forced to question all the principles which have governed their lives thus far.

Ramón knows that only someone who really loves him will help him undertake his ultimate journey.

Alejandro Amenábar nasce a Santiago del Cile nel 1972 ma la famiglia si trasferisce a Madrid l'anno dopo. Studia all'Università di Madrid e dirige i primi cortometraggi. Dirige il primo lungometraggio, Tesis, grazie al sostegno produttivo di José Luis Cuerda e con questo lavoro vince sette premi Goya. Il secondo film, Abre los ojos, viene distribuito anche all'estero ed è così che Tom Cruise lo conosce e gli produce il terzo lungometraggio oltre a finanziare e recitare nel remake di Abre los ojos, Vanilla Sky (Cameron Crowe, 2001). È anche sceneggiatore, attore, montatore e compositore delle colonne sonore dei suoi film.

Born in Santiago, Chile, in 1972, Amenábar moved with his family to Madrid in 1973. He studied at the University of Madrid, and directed his first short films. He directed Tesis, his first feature-length film with production support from José Luis Cuerda, and together they won seven Goyas Prizes. His second film, Abre los ojos, was released abroad and brought him to the attention of Tom Cruise, who produced his third feature-length film and financed and starred in the remake of Abre los ojos, Vanilla Sky (Cameron Crowe, 2001). Amenábar is also a screenplay writer, actor, editor and musical composer for the soundtracks to his own films.

«È logico che abbia fatto io questo film sugli esseri umani e la morte. È qualcosa da sempre presente nel mio cinema. Sono interessato alle persone, a ciò che dà un senso all'esistenza o a quello che lo toglie: la morte. Mar adentro è, o si propone di essere, innanzitutto un viaggio. Un viaggio verso la vita e la morte, un viaggio in Galizia, un viaggio in mare e nel mondo interiore di Ramón Sampedro. L'immagine è il riflesso della caratterizzazione di Javier Bardem. Ogni giorno si sedeva al trucco per cinque ore, un processo intenso che ha sopportato con grande pazienza. Sicuramente come avrebbe fatto Ramón Sampedro. «It's only logical that I should have made this film, which is about human beings and death. It's something that's always been present in my cinema. I am interested in people, in what makes existence meaningful, or strips it of any meaning: death. Mar adentro is, or purports to be, first and foremost, a journey. A journey towards life and death; a journey to Galicia; a journey out to sea and to the inner world of Ramón Sampedro. The image is the reflection of Javier Bardem's thorough characterisation to allow him to look the part. Bardem had to go through five hours' make-up everyday; a very intense process he endured with a great deal of patience.

No doubt like Ramón Sampedro would have. But a deeper look, beneath the surface, will reveal just how much this image expresses the very essence of Ramón: that of a serene being, full of courage, someone capable of facing adversity without ever losing his smile. As Ramón Sampedro said: "When there's no way out, you learn to cry with a smile on your face"»
